    Safari on older macOS/iOS versions can be flaky with HEIC; if Upload Photo fails, open the image in Photos and Export→JPEG, or use the iOS Share→Save as Image option to force a JPG. On desktop, Chrome and Firefox handle HEIC better but large HEICs (>30–50 MB) can still crash mobile browsers, so convert or reduce resolution first. If conversion tools aren’t available, take a new photo in JPEG mode or use the tool’s Mobile Camera option to capture directly into the editor.

    Most passport/visa authorities require a plain white or near-white background; choose Background → White in the editor to replace the existing background with a smooth white fill and subtle edge smoothing. For shadows that affect face detection, retake on a well-lit, evenly lit surface (stand about 1.2–2 m from the background) or use the built-in Background tool with the Smooth slider set to 6–10 to remove faint shadows without blurring hair edges. Heavy shadows should be fixed by re-taking the photo rather than aggressive background removal.

    If the tool reports no face detected, make sure the photo shows your full head and shoulders, with your face occupying at least 30–50% of the frame; upload a different crop if necessary. For multiple faces the editor shows a Select Face overlay — pick the correct face or manually crop to a single-person photo before uploading. If Auto Crop misplaces the box, use Manual Crop to drag and resize the guide and then click Apply Crop to enforce the template rules.

    For the US 2×2 template the default download is a JPG at 600×600 px (2×2 inches at 300 DPI), and for 35×45 mm the tool exports roughly 413×532 px at 300 DPI. The PDF Print Sheet option generates high-resolution, 300 DPI PDFs with multiple photos arranged for standard print sizes (4×6 or A4), which is best for local labs. If you choose lower JPG quality (e.g., 70–80%), the file size shrinks but fine detail can be lost — keep 90–100% for passport submissions and printing.

    On desktop Chrome and Firefox the editor runs smoothly and handles large images up to ~50 MB; Safari and older Edge may convert HEIC or fail on very large files. On iOS, Safari memory limits can cause crashes with very high-resolution photos — use the app’s Mobile Camera capture or reduce photo size before upload. Touch gestures are supported for crop/zoom on mobile, but for precise head placement and final prints we recommend using a desktop with a mouse if possible.

    Image processing is done in your browser wherever possible and the tool does not require account creation or persistent uploads — temporary uploads may go to a server for background processing in specific cases, but files are not tied to a user account and are deleted within a short retention window. If you need maximum privacy, use the editor offline: capture a photo, crop it locally and use the tool’s editor without clicking any optional cloud-processing toggles.
