How to Find the Qibla Direction Anywhere in the World

Finding the qibla — the direction of the Kaaba in Makkah — is the first step of every prayer for over a billion Muslims worldwide. From a familiar mosque it is trivial because the prayer hall is already aligned, but in a hotel room, an airport terminal, a co-working space or a friend's living room, you need a reliable way to find the direction yourself. Fortunately, a phone and a free web tool are all you need.

The Qibla Direction tool on Rash Tools uses your device's GPS to calculate the great-circle bearing from your exact location to the Kaaba. The angle is given in degrees clockwise from true north, which is what every compass app (and most magnetic compasses) will give you. Hold the device flat, align with the angle shown, and you are facing the qibla within a degree or two — well within any scholarly tolerance.

Two factors can throw a magnetic compass off. Magnetic declination is the difference between true north and magnetic north — anywhere from 0° to 20° depending on your location. Modern phone compass apps already correct for this; if you are using a hiking compass, add or subtract the local declination shown on the qibla tool. Avoid using the compass next to metal furniture, laptops or large speakers, which distort the magnetic field.

If you cannot get GPS — basement room, aeroplane, no signal — the tool also lets you type a city name. It uses the city's coordinates from a public dataset and gives the qibla direction from there, which is accurate to within a kilometre or two of where you actually are. That tiny error makes no real difference to the qibla angle for any practical purpose.

Once you know the angle, mark it. A small piece of tape on the floor of a regular prayer spot, a saved photo of the room with an arrow drawn on it, or the qibla sticker some hotels place on the ceiling all save you from re-checking before every prayer. Pair the tool with Prayer Times on Rash Tools and you have the two pieces of information every traveller needs in a single browser tab.

    Frequently asked questions

    How accurate is the compass?

GPS-based direction (from your device coordinates to the Kaaba) is accurate to about 0.1 degree. The magnetic compass reading depends on your phone's calibration — hold the phone flat, do a figure-eight motion to calibrate, and don't stand near metal or electronics.

Do I need to grant location permission?

Yes, GPS is required for a bearing calculation. The tool asks the browser for permission and uses your coordinates once — nothing is stored. You can also enter coordinates manually if you prefer not to share location.

    Does the compass work indoors?

GPS-derived direction works anywhere the device has coarse location. Magnetic compass accuracy drops indoors near metal beams, wiring and appliances — use it in an open room and away from your laptop or phone charger for best results.

What if my phone doesn't have a magnetometer (compass sensor)?

Most phones from 2015+ have one. If yours doesn't, the tool falls back to showing the qibla bearing as an angle (e.g. '297 degrees from north') and you can use a physical compass or landmark alignment.

How does the tool calculate direction to the Kaaba?

It computes the great-circle bearing from your GPS coordinates to the Kaaba's coordinates (21.4225°N, 39.8262°E). That's the shortest path across the globe, which is why the qibla from London points slightly east of straight south-east.

Is the tool tied to any prayer app?

No, it's standalone. Pair it with the Prayer Times tool for a complete Islamic essentials setup.

    Is my location data stored?

No, coordinates are used once for calculation and discarded when you close the tab.

Why is qibla different in different countries?

Because you point to Mecca from wherever you are — the direction depends on your position on Earth. From New York it's roughly north-east; from Sydney, roughly north-west; from Cape Town, north.

Does the direction change over time?

No, the Kaaba's coordinates don't change. Only true north wanders slowly (magnetic declination), and the tool corrects for that automatically using the World Magnetic Model.

How is this different from a physical Kaaba compass?

A physical qibla compass is fixed to one location; you'd need a different one when travelling. This tool recalculates from wherever you are, so it works everywhere.
