This tool accepts only PDF files with the .pdf extension as input; images are ignored if uploaded by mistake. Single-file uploads must be 100 MB or smaller; batch mode supports up to 5 PDFs at once and a total batch size of 250 MB. Output is always a .pdf; compressed files are provided immediately as downloads and are not converted to other formats like .jpg or .docx.

Standard compression targets a 30–60% size reduction by downsampling images to 150–200 DPI and recompressing embedded JPEGs at roughly 70–85% quality, which preserves text sharpness and vector graphics. Strong compression can reach 60–90% reduction by downsampling scanned images to 72–150 DPI and applying higher JPEG compression; expect visible softness on photos and potential loss of OCR accuracy. Pick Standard for business docs and Strong only when file size is the top priority, and always inspect the downloaded PDF before sending.

Common causes are a password-protected PDF, browser memory limits, or an interrupted connection; the tool will show an "Encrypted PDF" error if the file is password-protected — remove the password in Acrobat or Preview first. For large files (>50 MB) Safari on iOS often runs out of memory; switch to desktop Chrome/Firefox or upload from a PC. If the progress bar freezes, clear the browser cache, try Incognito mode, or split the PDF and compress smaller chunks.

For scanned PDFs the compressor treats pages as images: it downscales DPI and recompresses with JPEG, which reduces file size but can degrade OCR accuracy and legibility; expect DPI to be reduced to ~150–200 in Standard and 72–150 in Strong. If you need to preserve OCR, run OCR in Acrobat or a dedicated OCR tool before compressing, then use Standard compression to retain searchable text. The tool does not perform OCR itself, so compressed scanned PDFs may lose fine detail needed for text recognition.

By default Compress PDF Online Free processes files directly in your browser using client-side code, so no upload to our servers is required for standard compress operations; no account or signup is necessary and there is no watermark. If you use the optional Share button to create a cloud link, the compressed file is temporarily uploaded and the link expires after 24 hours — the UI prompts for confirmation before uploading. Always verify the page shows "Local processing" in the status bar if you need strictly local-only handling.

Chrome and Firefox on Windows, macOS and Android handle files up to the 100 MB limit reliably; you'll see a tab progress bar and background compression works while you switch tabs. Safari on iOS (especially iOS 13–15) can crash or fail on files larger than ~50 MB because of WebKit memory limits, so use Chrome on Android or a desktop browser for large PDFs. First try the Strong preset which applies more aggressive image downsampling and JPEG recompression; if that's insufficient, split the document into parts using a splitter (Preview on macOS, Acrobat, or our separate Split PDF tool) or remove embedded attachments and unused font subsets. For scanned-heavy PDFs consider rescanning at a lower DPI or convert pages to monochrome where acceptable (b/w reduces size dramatically). For absolute control, use Acrobat Pro’s PDF Optimizer to tweak exact DPI, JPEG quality and flatten transparency, or run Ghostscript with custom downsampling parameters for batch automation.

Adobe Acrobat Pro offers more granular controls (per-image DPI, font embedding, and PDF/A options) and can preserve vectors and OCR better; its PDF Optimizer is best for professional workflows and very large files. Photoshop will rasterize each page when saving PDFs, often increasing file size and losing vector quality, so avoid Photoshop for multi-page text PDFs. Our online tool is handy for quick one-off compressions without installation, but for high-volume or precision optimization choose Acrobat Pro or Ghostscript.

Remove embedded attachments and unused fonts before compression, flatten form fields, and convert color images to grayscale if color isn't needed — these actions usually reduce size more than changing compression alone. Start with the Standard preset and inspect the PDF; if acceptable, stop there. If not, try Strong and, when necessary, split large graphics-heavy documents into sections or re-export from the source application at lower image DPI (150–200 for standard documents, 72–150 for web/email).
