Open the site, click Upload Files or drag-and-drop PDFs and supported images into the dashed drop area. After upload thumbnails appear; reorder files by dragging the file cards or use the up/down arrows, remove a file with the trash icon, and expand a file to rearrange individual pages or rotate single pages. When ready, click Merge PDF (button text) to start; a progress bar shows local processing and you’ll get a merged.pdf download prompt or an option to Save to device, Google Drive, or Dropbox.

The tool accepts PDF, JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, TIFF and HEIC inputs — image files are auto-converted to PDF pages during merge. Per-file uploads work reliably up to about 100 MB, with a practical total-project limit of roughly 500 MB or 200 files; page-count limits are approximately 2,000 pages in total before browser memory issues appear. For best results use Chrome or Firefox on desktop; mobile browsers may hit lower limits due to RAM constraints.

Yes — if you upload JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, TIFF or HEIC the tool converts each image to a single PDF page automatically before joining. Default conversion uses 150 DPI image downsampling; there is an optional Advanced Quality toggle to keep images at 300 DPI for printing, which increases file size. Converted images are embedded as JPEG-compressed streams inside the output PDF, so high-DPI keeps visual quality but produces a larger merged.pdf.

By default the tool concatenates pages without re-rendering vector text, so text PDFs generally keep original fidelity; raster images inside PDFs may be recompressed depending on the Compress output checkbox. If Compress is enabled, images are downsampled to 150 DPI and recompressed at about 85% JPEG quality reducing output size; if left off, the tool preserves original image streams when possible, which means output size will be close to the sum of inputs. Note that aggressive compression can make scanned text blurry, so test on a copy first.

Mobile browsers, especially Safari on iOS, have stricter memory caps which cause large merges to fail; try using Chrome on Android or a desktop with more RAM. Reduce failure risk by splitting a big job into smaller batches (10–20 files), shrinking images to under 10–20 MB each beforehand, or removing unneeded pages with the page thumbnails. Also close other tabs/apps, enable Request Desktop Site (Safari) if thumbnails don’t render, and retry — desktop merges usually succeed where mobile times out.

Merge PDF Online Free requires no signup, and merged output is delivered without a watermark by default; you simply upload, merge, and download merged.pdf. There are usage limits for extremely heavy or automated use — the site may rate-limit repeated large merges in a short period — but basic ad-free merges are free for occasional users. If you need high-volume or API access, consider a paid enterprise solution, but personal merges remain free and immediate.

Files are processed locally in your browser whenever possible: the merge operation runs client-side so your input files don’t have to be uploaded to a remote server. The only time files are transmitted is when you explicitly use Save to Google Drive/Dropbox or if the browser cannot perform the task locally and the tool falls back to a server-side worker (you’ll see a notice); transient server uploads are deleted within a short retention window (typically one hour). Always double-check the Save options if you need full offline privacy.

You can do both: drag file cards to set overall file order, then click the expand icon on a file card to see page thumbnails and drag those thumbnails to reorder pages inside that PDF. Each page thumbnail has rotate left/right icons and a delete (trash) icon to remove single pages before merge. These page-level edits happen in the browser UI and reflect immediately in the merged preview, so you don’t need a separate desktop editor just to rearrange pages.

Desktop apps like Adobe Acrobat Pro offer page-level redaction, OCR, form editing, bookmarks, and better performance on very large files because they run with full system memory; Acrobat also preserves advanced PDF features and accessibility tags. Merge PDF Online Free is faster for quick browser-based joins without installation and is ideal when you only need to join, reorder, rotate or compress files. If you need OCR, redaction, or complex PDF structure editing, use Acrobat or a dedicated desktop tool instead.

Safari on macOS and iOS handles HEIC differently and may not expose HEIC thumbnails to web apps; on iOS Safari you can see blank previews or a failed conversion. Workarounds: convert HEIC to JPEG in Photos (Share → Save as JPEG) or use Chrome on desktop which tends to accept HEIC more reliably, or change iPhone Camera format to Most Compatible (Settings → Camera → Formats). If you must upload HEIC, allow a few extra seconds for conversion or upload from a desktop where the browser has more conversion support.

The tool cannot merge a password-protected PDF unless you provide the password: when a locked PDF is detected you’ll see an Unlock dialog requesting the password before processing. If you supply the correct password the tool decrypts the file in-browser and proceeds with merging; if you don’t have the password you must remove protection with the original software that created the PDF or use a desktop tool that you trust. The tool will not bypass or brute-force encryption.

Select multiple files quickly with Shift-click or Ctrl/Cmd-click in the file picker, and use the Output filename field (defaults to merged.pdf) to set a meaningful name before clicking Merge PDF. Enable Create bookmarks from filenames to get a table-of-contents where each original file becomes a top-level bookmark, which helps long documents. For faster cleanup, use the trash icon on file cards to remove extras, and if you’re merging many similar files, zip your merged.pdf afterwards using your OS compression to keep distribution tidy.
