    Enter the vehicle Price in the “Vehicle Price” field, then fill Down Payment and Trade‑in Value (use negative numbers only if you want to add a payoff). Toggle “Include Sales Tax” and enter the tax rate (for example 8.25) and enter any Fees in the “Finance Charges” box. Choose Term (months or years), Interest Rate (annual %, e.g., 4.5) and click the blue Calculate Payment button; results show Monthly Payment, Total Interest, Total Paid and an Amortization tab with Payment# and Balance. Use Clear to reset or Add Another Loan to set up a side‑by‑side comparison.

    Price accepts up to $999,999 and allows commas and decimals (e.g., 27,450.75); Down Payment and Trade‑in accept up to the full price. Term accepts months (6–120) or years converted to months (0.5–10 years accepted in the years selector); Interest Rate accepts 0–25.00% with two decimal places. Numeric inputs accept a period for decimals and will strip commas automatically; invalid characters show a red outline and the tooltip “Enter a valid number.”

    Click Add Another Loan to create up to three simultaneous loan scenarios (the button label is Add Another Loan and you can compare up to 3 columns). For each scenario enter Price, Down Payment, Term, Interest Rate and Fees, then click Calculate Payment for each column; the comparison view highlights the lowest monthly payment and lowest total interest. You can also Import Offers by uploading a CSV (UTF‑8, .csv only, up to 1 MB, max 50 rows) using the Import Offers button; Chrome/Edge handle CSV imports best — iOS Safari will open the CSV in a new tab first.

    Choose the Affordability tab, enter Gross or Net Monthly Income, Monthly Debt Obligations and select a target Debt‑to‑Income ratio (default 20% can be changed). The tool computes a Maximum Monthly Car Payment and then inverts the loan PMT formula to estimate the affordable Vehicle Price given your down payment, term and interest rate; for example, $3,500 net income with 15% DTI gives $525/month, which at 60 months and 4.5% APR corresponds to roughly a $27,000 car before tax and fees. The result shows both the Purchase Price estimate and a sensitivity slider to see how changing down payment or term alters the price.

    Switch the Vehicle Type selector to Used Car — the calculator then suggests term limits and typical rates (default term cap 72 months for used and a sample rate prefilled at 6.5%), but you can manually enter any term up to 120 months. The Used Car mode also exposes a checkbox for Older Car Factor that allows adding an extra % to the interest field for credit risk modeling (e.g., +1.5% default). The tool warns in a yellow notice if you choose very long terms (>84 months) or if the down payment is less than 5%, explaining higher interest costs per dollar financed.

    Open the Amortization tab then click Download CSV to save a .csv file (filename like amortization‑loan1.csv) or Print Schedule to produce a printable PDF via your browser’s print dialog (produces a .pdf if you choose Save as PDF). The CSV columns are Payment#, Date, Payment, Principal, Interest, Balance and exports are UTF‑8; typical files are tiny (<100 KB for 360 rows). Note: Excel opens the .csv fine; if you need .xlsx, import the CSV into Excel and Save As .xlsx — the tool does not export .xlsx directly.

    You enter the nominal annual Interest Rate (the rate used to compute periodic interest) and any one‑time Finance Charges (fees) in the Finance Charges field; the tool then computes an Estimated APR using the standard loan discounting method (solving for the rate that sets PV of payments equal to net proceeds). The APR shown is an approximation for comparison purposes and reflects your entered fees and term; for legally binding APRs consult your lender or a formal Truth in Lending disclosure since different jurisdictions calculate APR differently.

    Chrome and Edge on desktop are fully supported; Safari on macOS and iOS works but file import and CSV download behave differently — iOS Safari opens CSV in a new tab and you must tap Share → Save to Files to persist it. On older iOS Safari the numeric keypad sometimes omits the minus sign or decimal; if that happens switch to desktop or use Firefox on Android. Complex long amortization tables (360–1200 rows) are generated in the browser and may be slower on low‑memory mobile devices, but typical 60–84 month loans render instantly.

    If a required field is empty the input shows a red outline and tooltip “Required” and Calculate Payment is disabled; fill all required fields (Price, Interest Rate, Term or select Term in years) to proceed. Entering negative interest, non‑numeric characters, or a down payment greater than the Price will trigger specific inline errors — remove commas only if your locale requires it, or use the Clear button and retype. For 0% interest loans the tool runs a special zero‑rate branch (no divide‑by‑zero) and will display Exact Monthly Payment without interest; if results look off, toggle Include Sales Tax or add Finance Charges.

    The calculator is free to use in the browser with no signup or installation and no watermark on exported PDFs or CSVs; simply open the site and start entering numbers. Calculations run client‑side in JavaScript so you don’t need to upload personal documents, and session comparison data is stored only in your browser memory (closing the tab clears unsaved scenarios). Optional CSV imports are the only file action and are limited to .csv files under 1 MB; there are no hidden fees or premium features required to calculate or export amortizations.

    The calculator rounds each monthly payment to cents and computes amortization so tiny remainders can appear on the final payment; you’ll see a Final Payment Adjustment note on the Amortization tab if the last payment differs by more than $0.05. There’s a toggle labeled Adjust final payment to include the residual balance in the last payment (default on), or you can choose Fixed monthly payment which shows a small balloon at the end. If you plan to import to Excel, export CSV and verify the last row — Excel’s SUMs will match the printed totals if you keep the calculator’s rounding setting.

    Excel lets you reproduce the PMT and amortization with PMT, IPMT and PPMT functions and offers full control, but requires setting up formulas and handling date series manually; our tool gives instant results and a ready‑to‑download CSV and PDF without building spreadsheets. Dedicated financial calculators (HP, TI) are precise and work offline for professionals, but they don’t produce printable amortization tables or CSV exports without extra steps. The trade‑off is convenience and shareable exports here versus the absolute flexibility of Excel or the portability of a handheld financial calculator.
